VAN ALSTYNE, TX. - Van Alstyne ISD will host a groundbreaking for its new high school at 10 a.m. on May 10 at 700 Collin McKinney Parkway. The event will be a major milestone for the city and its growing school district.
The new facility will be funded by a $325 bond referendum that voters approved last year. According to the district’s 2021 facility plan, a new high school will be built on the city’s west side. It will include a new practice gym, storm shelter, career tech building and expanded band and athletic facilities. When completed, it will house all the district’s high school students.
At that point, the current high school building will become a junior high for seventh and eighth-grade students. The current middle school would then transition to an intermediate school for fifth and sixth graders.
Long-range plans call for the construction of two additional elementary schools, renovations to current schools, and a new middle school somewhere down the line. According to a demographic study commissioned in 2020, the district’s student population will likely top 3,700 in less than eight years.
